Ask whether India is the world's fourth-largest economy and you get two answers. India's government said in December 2025 that it had passed Japan. The IMF's October 2026 projections put the crossover a year later, in 2027, at US$4.52 trillion.
The disagreement is about a rounding margin between two economies of roughly the same size. What nobody disputes is the direction. One of them is projected to grow 0.7% this year. The other, 7%.

The Growth Gap
The IMF raised its 2026 forecast for India by 0.6 percentage points in October, to 7.0%, citing domestic demand and services. The world economy is projected to slow to 3.1%.
A growth rate on its own sells nothing. What matters for a company is where that growth turns into spending, and the clearest record of spending in India is its payments network.
A Market That Already Pays Online
UPI, India's real-time payments system, processed 24.07 billion transactions in September 2026, worth Rs 29.37 lakh crore. That is more than 800 million payments a day, and 23% more than a year earlier. In September 2022 the figure was about 6.8 billion.
Behind the payments are 1.11 billion internet subscribers, according to TRAI's June 2026 figures. The spread is uneven: India has about 77 internet subscriptions per 100 people overall, but 48 in rural areas. For an app or consumer brand, that gap is both the limit of today's market and the size of the next one.
Where Foreign Capital Is Going
India recorded US$94.53 billion of gross foreign direct investment in FY 2025-26, the highest it has ever received. Equity inflows rose 18% to US$58.85 billion.
| FY 2025-26 | Figure |
|---|---|
| Gross FDI inflows | US$94.53 billion (record) |
| FDI equity inflows | US$58.85 billion, up 18% |
| Largest sector: computer software and hardware | US$13.9 billion |
| Largest source country: Singapore | US$19.8 billion |
| Largest destination state: Maharashtra | US$18.4 billion |

Software leading the list is not a coincidence. India now hosts 2,117 global capability centres, the in-house technology, finance and operations units of foreign companies, across 3,728 sites. They employ about 2.36 million people and earned close to US$98.4 billion in FY26, according to the Nasscom-Zinnov landscape report.
Made Here, Sold Everywhere
The most visible test case is the iPhone. India exported a record Rs 2 lakh crore of iPhones in FY26, making it the country's largest branded export. iPhones account for more than three quarters of India's smartphone exports. Assembly runs across five factories operated by Tata and Foxconn.
That shift was built on production-linked incentives, government payments tied to output made in India. The same schemes now cover electronics, pharmaceuticals, automobiles and textiles, which is why the question for many manufacturers has moved from "whether" to "which state, and under which scheme".
The Trade Doors Opening
| Agreement | Status |
|---|---|
| India-UK free trade agreement | In force since 15 July 2026 |
| India-UAE CEPA | In force |
| India-EU free trade agreement | Concluded 27 January 2026; signature targeted for December 2026, entry into force February-March 2027 |

Each agreement changes duties, rules of origin and, in some sectors, who can bid for what. Under the UK deal, Indian tariffs on Scotch whisky fall from 150% to 40%. The effects for services and investment are slower and less visible, and they are where most of the opportunity sits.
What the Numbers Leave Out
Every figure above describes a market that rewards the companies already inside it. None of them says how to get in. India offers several ways in, from selling across the border without a local company to a liaison office, a branch, a subsidiary or a capability centre. Each comes with its own approvals, tax position and reporting deadlines, and the right one depends on what is being sold, to whom, and how soon money needs to move in or out.
The companies that move fastest are rarely the largest. They are the ones that settle that choice first, before the first hire, the first invoice or the first rupee of investment.
