Google DeepMind is where Google does its most ambitious AI work. It builds Gemini, the models behind Google's assistant and the AI features in Search, Android and Workspace. It also produced two of the best-known breakthroughs in AI history: AlphaGo and AlphaFold.
From London Start-up to Google's AI Lab
DeepMind was founded in London in 2010 by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman. Google bought it in January 2014, for a price reported at between $400 million and $650 million. In April 2023 it merged with Google Brain, Google's in-house AI team, to form Google DeepMind. Hassabis leads it, and the lab has about 6,000 staff.
The Breakthroughs
| Year | Work | What it did |
|---|---|---|
| 2016 | AlphaGo | Beat world champion Lee Sedol 4 to 1 at Go, a game long thought too complex for computers |
| 2020 | AlphaFold | Predicted protein structures with accuracy comparable to lab methods |
| 2023 | Gemini | Google's flagship family of AI models, launched in December 2023 |
| 2024 | Nobel Prize | Hassabis and John Jumper shared half of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for AlphaFold |
| 2026 | Gemini 4 Argon | Announced in September as Google's new frontier model, built for deep reasoning over long tasks |
Gemini, Everywhere Google Is
Gemini is the part of DeepMind's work most people touch. It powers the Gemini assistant and AI features across Google's products, and businesses use it through Google Cloud. Alongside Gemini 4 Argon, Google offers Gemini 3.8 Flash, which it describes as its most intelligent workhorse model for coding and agents.
What Sets It Apart
Unlike OpenAI and Anthropic, DeepMind is not a standalone company raising money from investors. It is funded by Alphabet and sits inside Google, with direct access to Google's data centres, chips and billions of users. Its science projects, such as AlphaFold, also set it apart: they target problems in biology and science, not only products.
What It Means for Businesses
For a business already on Google Workspace or Google Cloud, Gemini is often the easiest model to adopt. The choice between Gemini, OpenAI's GPT models and Anthropic's Claude should still come down to which performs best on your actual task, at a cost that works.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does Google DeepMind do?
It is Google's AI research lab. It builds the Gemini models used across Google's products and runs scientific AI projects such as AlphaFold, which predicts the 3D structure of proteins.
Who owns DeepMind?
DeepMind is part of Alphabet, Google's parent company, which bought it in 2014. In 2023 it merged with Google Brain to form Google DeepMind.
Who runs Google DeepMind?
Demis Hassabis, who co-founded DeepMind in 2010, leads the lab.
What is AlphaFold?
An AI system from DeepMind that predicts the 3D shape of proteins from their sequence. Demis Hassabis and John Jumper shared half of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for it.
